Peeter Roosma chosen as the next Estonian judge at the European Court of Human Rights
PDFIn a session late last night, 26 June, the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) elected Peeter Roosma with absolute majority as the next Estonian judge in the European Court of Human Rights. Peeter Roosma is a judge of the Supreme Court of Estonia.
PACE had to choose between three candidates presented by Estonia and confirmed in December 2018: Madis Ernits, Meeli Kaur and Peeter Roosma. The state presented the candidates in alphabetical order.
Peeter Roosma will assume office on 4 January 2020, at the end of the nine-year term of Julia Laffranque, Estonia’s current judge at the European Court of Human Rights.
In Estonia, the competition for the judge of the European Court of Human Rights is organised by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The candidates are chosen by a commission that includes the Foreign Minister, the Justice Minister, the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, the Chancellor of Justice and the Secretary of State, and the list is approved by the Government of the Republic.
The European Court of Human Rights is an international court that applies the European Convention on Human Rights. The court is composed of judges from 47 member states of the Council of Europe that have ratified the convention. The judges are independent and do not represent any country.
