Saale Laos appointed Chairwoman of the Criminal Chamber

From 1 January 2017, the work of the Criminal Chamber of the Supreme Court has been led by Saale Laos.

Saale Laos graduated from the School of Law of the University of Tartu in 1996, and obtained a Magister iuris (cum laude) degree from the University of Tartu in 2000. She became a justice of the Supreme Court in March 2014. 

Before becoming a member of the Supreme Court, she worked as an adviser to the Chancellor of Justice and spent ten years in the field of penal law and penal politics at the Ministry of Justice. Saale Laos has taken part in the drafting of the Special Part of the Penal Code, as well as in the Riigikogu proceedings to draft the Code of Criminal Procedure, and led the drafting of the Penal Code and the Code of Criminal Procedure Implementation Act.

The Criminal Chamber of the Supreme Court is comprised of six judges, ten advisers and one consultant. The Chairman manages the work of the Chamber, and is also a member of the Administration of the Supreme Court.

Hannes Kiris, the former Chairman of the Chamber, will continue working as a member of the Criminal Chamber.
